The Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) created the first British armored squadron during World War I. [2] In September 1914, all available Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost chasises were requisitioned to create the base of the new car armored. The following month, a special committee of the Admiralty Air Department, which included Flight Commander T.G. Hetherington, designed the superstructure of the car that was formed by the armored body and a single rotating turret armed with a Vickers machine gun.
The first three vehicles were supplied on December 3, 1914, although by then the mobile period of the Western Front where the primitive Rolls-Royce predecessors had served had already ended.2 They later settled on several fronts of the Middle East [3] Production of chasises was suspended in 1917 to allow the Rolls-Royce to concentrate on the production of aircraft engines. [4]
The vehicle was modernized in 1920 and 1924, giving rise to the Rolls-Royce Model 1920 and Rolls-Royce Model 1924. In 1940, 34 vehicles serving in Egypt with the 11th Hussars Regiment were replaced with the "old" turret with an open turret, armed with a 13.9 mm Boys antitank rifle, a 7.70 mm Bren light machine gun and smoke grenade launchers.
Some vehicles serving in Egypt and Iraq received Fordson truck chassis and were known as Fordson armored cars. The photographs [5] show them equipped with what appear to be turrets armed with an anti-tank rifle Boys, a machine gun and two light machine guns for air defense.
